A deadly outbreak of diphtheria had threatened the area and farmer John Endres prayed or protection for his family.

He promised if his family endured the epidemic he would build a chapel on top of the hill from which he prayed. His family survived and Endres, as he had promised, built the tiny chapel on top of the highest hill in Indian Lake,WI. The area now is part of Indian Lake State Park.

I used to take my kids here when they were little, and they always got a kick out of ducking into the little chapel. It's a beautiful park, and it was a beautiful day. Indian Lake State Park is less than half an hour from Madison. Take hwy 12 West towards Sauk City to just past Springfield Corners, and go left on hwy 19. The park is just a few minutes down the road. Set the camera at iso 200 with manual exposure set at f/5.6 at 1/25th sec. This is the same setup I use for shooting weddings, except I shoot Nikon D200's and use studio lights for the formals. And basically the same social skill set works well at all dress up occasions. Stay low-key, be friendly and take as many photos as you can while having a very good time yourself ... Terry

Madison WI Wedding Photographer|Terry Talbot

The March of the Six Hundred ...

It was another beautiful Fall day in Wisconsin last Sunday as six hundred avid supporters of NAMI (National Alliamce on Mental Illness) marched three miles in mass to raise money for mental health awareness. I called her and she sounded nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. No time to get a fancy dress, manicure or hairdo. I assured her that the important thing was that they were getting married and that they were doing it "their way". And I thought to myself, "Isn't Baumgartners a cheeseshop".

Next morning I drove to Monroe for the 11:30 ceremony. Sure enough, Baumgartners is a cheese shop. The crowd was small but enthusiastic, the ceremony was sweet, and the cheese and salami sandwich the groom bought me was the best I'd ever had.

Jimmy is Jimmy Voegeli, a Madison musician well known for his keyboard playing and singing, most recently with the Jimmys, but he's also part of the Voegeli dairy farm family; five generations of award winning dairy cattlemen in Monroe WI. Laura says that when Jimmy isn't playing music he's cleaning manure out from under his fingernails. The Voegelis sponsor the World Dairy Expo. Turns out Jimmy and Laura set the last minute wedding date right before the Expo when things in Monroe would be focused on the festive activities around the world famous event.

It was a great wedding, and they did it their way. There's nothing like being a special part of a couple's wedding day and knowing that you're creating images for them that they'll cherish for years to come.

However; it's that time of year when I get a lot of calls for last minute senior photos from anxious parents hoping it's not too late to get their son'e or daughter's pictures done before the yearbook deadline. I love doing senior photos. Most of the time these young folks are a little leary about the photo shoot and it's great fun to see them warm up to the shooting situation as we move along. Soon they're having great fun too (and getting getting great photos at the same time). I like to create my senior photos out-of-doors on location using natural light, and try not to be too 'posey'.

This was a quick shoot for Jon. Don't know if it's a true story or not, but I found it inspiring and perhaps you will too.

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question:

"When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does, is done with perfection.. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do.He cannot understand things as other children do.Where is the natural order of things in my son?"

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued.

'"I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child."

Then he told the following story:

Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, "Do you think they'll let me play?"

I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps..

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning."

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.

In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again.

Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat. At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat.

Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay... As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher. The game would now be over.

The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game. Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates.

Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first! Run to first!' Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.
Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!'

Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.

By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball . the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, "Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay". Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, "Run to third! Shay, run to third!"
As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, "Shay, run home! Run home!"

Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team

"That day", said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, "the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world".

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day

(Unknown author)

<div class="zemanta-pixie" style="height: 15px; I was sitting in a coffee shop downtown when I saw her. I looked up from my coffee cup to see this amazing looking young woman, Chelsea. I told her I was a pro shooter, showed her my business card and asked her what she'd think about posing for some quick shots for me. We could step right outside the back door and find some interesting backgrounds.
I was surprised to hear that she had no modeling experience. She's a natural.

The alley with the dark gray industrial refuse bin made an excellent background for Chelsea. Sort of industrial punk. Did just a few quick shots there. For you equipment junkies I was shooting my Nikon D200 with an 18-200 f3.5/5.6 VR zoom lens wide open at iso 320, hand held. The VR lens is nice for that. I can shoot hand held at a 1/15th shutter speed zoomed out and still get a nice sharp image. No tripod needed here.

The whole shoot took about 15 minutes, and it was fun for both Chelsea and me. With nothing in mind but that stopped by the East Side Club on Lake Monona to catch a view of the Capitol building across the lake.

I blended 3 separate exposures using Photo Matrix to get this shot, f5.6 at 30th, a 15th, and 1/6th of a sec. The camera was, of course, on a tripod.

I also liked the look of the cabin like poontoon boats parked at the pier behind the East Side Club, so I shot a couple of frames of them with the Capitol in the background. This time I blended 2 exposures to get the result.

Of course I couldn't pass up a chance to shoot my cute little 350Z

Guess I had the Capitol on my mind, so headed a little West to King St and got this view of the it. I stood in the street to get this time exposure and was lucky no crazy drivers were out on the street yet to play dodgeball with my camera clad body. So you walk into this fairly small crowded space with a great band with lousey lighting. The singer is wailing on the guitar and slinking around on the stage.

Whatcha gonna do? For sure you don't want to be blasting your guitar heros with blazes of light from your mega watts on board shoe mounted studio lighting system. Rude boys might; I turn off the flash and go available light. Since most clubs are sinfully dimly lit you're going to need to set your camera to wide open, the largest aperture available. You can do this by setting the camera to aperture mode 'A', and selecting the smallest aperture available (f 3.8 - 5.6 on my Nikon 18-200 zoom). The camera will then set the correct shutter speed for you to get a good exposure. But that guitar playing is slinking around and wailing on the guitar, remember. He's going to be blurred for sure, especially those lightening fast picking and fretting hands, so you need enough speed for the shutter to stop the action. To do that you'll have to pump your camera's iso to it's highest rating (iso 1600 or higher). Wait a minute. Doesn't that creat a lot of noise in the photo? Yes it does. You can reduce it by using a noise reducing program in post production (you know, after you take the picture and it's in your computer and you fix it up)like Noise Ninja, or you can look at it like I do that the noise is just part of the arty look, like my old grainy high speed film b&w photos.

Either way, there are times when the guitar player, or drummer etc, will pause momentarily and offer you a shot at a non moving object. If you practice it a bit you'll start to sense when those moments are about to arrive in fron of your lens. So use a wide open aperture, highest iso, and wait for the right moment. And have a blast without your flash.

Photos are of Pistol Pete. See and hear him at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89oXY8aGM2E/

Terry

Madison WI photographer Terry Talbot

http://www.talbotphoto.com/

The digital photo age - from wedding shoot to wedding show in less than a week!

Rachel & Nolen got married last Saturday at Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, WI. It was a medium sized ceremony with a reception across the street at The East Side Club. The proximity of the two locations and the fact that the wedding was held at a botanical garden setting made it easy for me to get plenty of great shots without spending a lot of time traveling with the couple. Rachel and Nolen booked me for four hours of photography, so efficiency was called for. It was a nice wedding, and a great party. Rachel and Nolen sure know how to cut a rug. Since the ceremony was inside with strong back lighting I metered for the correct exposure of the subjects (I don't use flash on ceremonies) and set the camera to a manual exposure of F/5.6 at 125th/sec at iso 400, then left it there for the ceremony. Later it was necessary to increase the contrast slightly in Photoshop to overcome the softness caused by the strong backlight coming through the windows.

A note: if you put your camera on maual as I did here don't forgot to it back in auto mode when you're done ;-)

We had a nice brief walk throught the gardens and then on to the reception

All in all it was a another beautiful wedding day. Handfasting is an old world Celtic tradition that pre-dated traditional Christian ceremonies, and is still a common tradition in Scotland. If you saw the movie Braveheart you might remember the scene in which Wallace and Murron are married in a secret handfasting ceremony in the woods. In a handfasting wedding ritual the officient takes the hands of the couple and lightly ties them together with a ribbon or cord, symbolizing their coming together in marriage, just as does the more modern practice of lighting a unity candle. Thus the terms tying the knot and asking for her hand in marriage. Now you know.

Madison WI photographer Terry Talbot

http://www.talbotphoto.com/

The Musician and the Photographer

"So what does a wedding and portrait photographer do when he's not taking pictures of some fabulous event? Playing lead guitar in Madison WI based roots band called Kronic Jones. Spaceman (Master Guy Lee Fields) and I comprise the core band, along with the Mothership Connection/Jennifer Pendur on bass, and Andre Pruett on drums. At 62 am I too old to be playing rock and roll? I'm just glad I'm still around to be playing anything. Praise Be. And we're not really a rock and roll band. Kronic Jones is the aural realization of the quest for a deeper understanding of the underpinnings of our common cultural reality, and for spiritual clarity in the face of abundant mystical obscuity. Create a ‘Shot List’

Get the couple to think ahead about the shots that they’d like you to capture on the day and compile a list so that you can check them off.
This is particularly helpful in the family shots. There’s nothing worse than getting the photos back and realizing you didn’t photograph the happy couple with grandma!

2. Family Photo Coordinator

I find the family photo part of the day can be quite stressful. People are going everywhere, you’re unaware of the different family dynamics at play and people are in a ‘festive spirit’ (and have often been drinking a few spirits) to the point where it can be quite chaotic. Get the couple to nominate a family member (or one for each side of the family) who can be the ‘director’ of the shoot. They can round everyone up, help get them in the shot and keep things moving so that the couple can get back to the party.

3. Scout the Location

Visit the locations of the different places that you’ll be shooting before the big day. While I’m sure most Pros don’t do this – I find it really helpful to know where we’re going, have an idea of a few positions for shots and to know how the light might come into play. On one or two weddings I even visited locations with the couples and took a few test shots (these made nice ‘engagement photos’).

4. Preparation is key

So much can go wrong on the day – so you need to be well prepared. Have a backup plan (in case of bad weather), have batteries charged, memory cards blank, think about routes and time to get to places and get an itinerary of the full day so you know what’s happening next. If you can, attend the rehearsal of the ceremony where you’ll gather a lot of great information about possible positions to shoot from, the lighting, the order of the ceremony etc.

5. Set expectations with the Couple

Show them your work/style. Find out what they are wanting to achieve, how many shots they want, what key things they want to be recorded, how the shots will be used (print etc). If you’re charging them for the event, make sure you have the agreement of price in place up front.

6. Turn off the sound on your camera

Beeps during speeches, the kiss and vows don’t add to the event. Switch off sound before hand and keep it off.

7. Shoot the small details

Photograph rings, backs of dresses, shoes, flowers, table settings, menus etc – these help give the end album an extra dimension. Flick through a wedding magazine in a news stand for a little inspiration.

8. Use Two Cameras

Beg, borrow, hire or steal an extra camera for the day – set it up with a different lens. I try to shoot with one wide angle lens (great for candid shots and in tight spaces (particularly before the ceremony in the preparation stage of the day) and one longer lens (it can be handy to have something as large as 200mm if you can get your hands on one. I use a 18 -200mm).

9. Be Bold but Not Obtrusive

Timidity won’t get you ‘the shot’ – sometimes you need to be bold to capture a moment. However timing is everything and thinking ahead to get in the right position for key moments are important so as not to disrupt the event. In a ceremony I try to move around at least 4-5 times but try to time this to coincide with songs, sermons or longer readings. During the formal shots be bold, know what you want and ask for it from the couple and their party. You’re driving the show at this point of the day and need to keep things moving.

10. Learn how to Use Diffused Light

The ability to bounce a flash or to diffuse it is key. You’ll find that in many churches that light is very low. If you’re allowed to use a flash (and some churches don’t allow it) think about whether bouncing the flash will work (remember if you bounce off a colored surface it will add a colored cast to the picture) or whether you might want to buy a flash diffuser to soften the light. If you can’t use a flash you’ll need to either use a fast lens at wide apertures and/or bump up the ISO. A lens with image stabilization might also help. Learn more about Using Flash Diffusers and Reflectors.

11. Shoot in RAW

I know that many readers feel that they don’t have the time for shooting in RAW (due to extra processing) but a wedding is one time that it can be particularly useful as it gives so much more flexibility to manipulate shots after taking them. Weddings can present photographers with tricky lighting which result in the need to manipulate exposure and white balance after the fact – RAW will help with this considerably.

12. Consider Your Backgrounds

One of the challenges of weddings is that there are often people going everywhere – including the backgrounds of your shots. Particularly with the formal shots scope out the area where they’ll be taken ahead of time looking for good backgrounds. Ideally you’ll be wanting uncluttered areas and shaded spots out of direct sunlight where there’s unlikely to be a wandering great aunt wander into the back of the shot. Read more on getting backgrounds right.

13. Don’t Discard Your ‘Mistakes’

The temptation with digital is to check images as you go and to delete those that don’t work immediately. The problem with this is that you might just be getting rid of some of the more interesting and useable images. Keep in mind that images can be cropped or manipulated later to give you some more arty/abstract looking shots that can add real interest to the end album.

14. Change Your Perspective

Get a little creative with your shots. While the majority of the images in the end album will probably be fairly ‘normal’ or formal poses – make sure you mix things up a little by taking shots from down low, up high, at wide angles etc.

15. Group Shots

One thing that I’ve done at every wedding that I’ve photographed is attempt to photograph everyone who is in attendance ithe one shot. The way I’ve done this is to arrange for a place that I can get up high
above everyone straight after the ceremony. This might mean getting tall ladder, using a balcony or even climbing on a roof. The beauty of getting up high is that you get everyone’s face in it and can fit a lot of people in the one shot. The key is to be able to get everyone to the place you want them to stand quickly and to be ready to get the shot without having everyone stand around for too long. I found the best way to get everyone to the spot is to get the bride and groom there and to have a couple of helpers to herd everyone in that direction.

16. Fill Flash

When shooting outside after a ceremony or during the posed shots you’ll probably want to keep your flash attached to give a little fill in flash. I tend to dial it back a little (a stop or two) so that shots are not blown out – but particularly in backlit or midday shooting conditions where there can be a lot of shadow, fill in flash is a must.

17. Continuous Shooting Mode

Having the ability to shoot a lot of images fast is very handy on a wedding day so switch your camera to continuous shooting mode and use it. Sometimes it’s the shot you take a second after the formal or posed shot when everyone is relaxing that really captures the moment!

18. Expect the Unexpected

One more piece of advice that someone gave me on my own wedding day. ‘Things will Go Wrong – But They Can be the Best Parts of the Day’. In every wedding that I’ve participated in something tends to go wrong with the day. The best man can’t find the ring, the rain pours down just as the ceremony ends, the groom forgets to do up his fly, the flower girl decides to sit down in the middle of the aisle or the bride can’t remember her vows…. These moments can feel a little panicky at the time – but it’s these moments that can actually make a day and give the bride and groom memories. Attempt to capture them and you could end up with some fun images
that sum up the day really well.

19. Have Fun

Weddings are about celebrating – they should be fun. The more fun you have as the photographer the more relaxed those you are photographing will be. Perhaps the best way to loosen people up is to smile as the photographer (warning: I always come home from photographing weddings with sore jaws and cheeks because of of my smiling strategy).

Madison WI photographer Terry Talbot

http://www.talbotphoto.com/

The death of DADA - The birth of MAMA

Dan Yopack stood the Madison art scene on it's head by declaring "The death of dada and the birth of mama" at the launch of his Williamson Street gallery/artists co-operative, Gallery 853, in 1974. The gallery quickly became the center of focus for the lively Near Eastside arts community. Art shows, happenings, theatre, music, whatever. Notable Madison artists like photographers Kathy Agard (Cate Loughran), Janica Yoder, and Phyllis Galembo; printmaker Bob Danner, poets Don Hilgenberg, Michael Bonesteel, Michael Martens, Patty Covina, David Bicknase, and Hannibal Plath; artist/musicians Peter Berryman and the Amazement Company (Dennis Coleman, Cele Wolff, and Ray Ray), theater director/playwright Joel Gershman; and multi-dimensional artist Sharon Kilfoy were earlier members of Gallery 853, along with a whole lot of other very talented artists and musicians. Oh, and Dan's good old dog Sam, who'd take his leash in his mouth and take himself for a walk. One art 'incident' I recall with great fondeness is the tossing of the tv into the Yahara river by Don Hilgenberg. Dan lives in Santa Fe now and works has a stone carver and shamman. Michael Bonesteel, Chicago art critic and former Gallery 853 poet/artist, drove up from Chicago to see Dan. I took the group picture at Bon Apetite, not too far up the street from the old Gallery 853 spot (now Survival Graphics). Lived there when I was a kid. There's no other city like the City of Big Shoulders, the Windy City, yep, my kind of town. Drove down from Madison to Chicago Friday night and stayed with an old acquaintance from the 70's Madison art scene, Michael Bonesteel. Michael is a Chicago based art critic, writer and teacher. And the the occupant of a very cool pad on Chicago's northside. I slid into town a little later than planned on and caught Michael as he was heading out, drum under arm, to meet up with his men's drumming group. So what do you do for six hours at a men's drumming group anyway? Wouldn't be surprised if part of the goings on included smoking fine cigars, one of Michael's (and his girlfriend's) little pleasures.

I headed out to explore my and my assistant's old neighborhoods after Michael left. My assistant, Jen, mostly plays bass in my band Kronic Jones, but I thought it would be worthwhile to bring her along to help with equipment on this very special wedding in Chicago. So the two us cruised Chi-town, looking at the old neighborhoods. Jen seemed surprised and a little saddened by all the changes that had come about since she and her friend Russell Thorne had left Chicago for Madison to be near the Buddhist temple in Deer Park. Russell is a jazz alumnus of the downtown Chicago music scene, and one of those spiritual seeker types you find hanging out in esoteric book stores and antiquity shops. Anyway, yes, things sure have changed. My old neighborhood was near Clark and Wells, now Old Towne. Neighborhood used to be just run down old town.

After cruising for awhile Jen decided we should get something to eat, and she knew where; Sultans Market in Wicker Park. Jen thought it was on the southside. So we're cruising the 2000 block of N. Clark St and Jen call's her friend and co-musicial conspirator Madison jazz icon Joanne Powers for directions and Joanne tells her it's located on N. Clark. A magical moment! The restaurant is right across the street from us on the left just as Joanne tells us it's location. Would have been more magical if it was still open for business after 10pm on a Friday night. But we managed to each get a closing time falafel. Very nice. But the spinach cheese pie, unattainable as it was, called to me. Like eat me, yum yum.

Later got to have a nice visit with Michael back at his place before we crashed for the night. And the next day it was off to the 4th Presbytarian Church off of Michigan Avenue. Beautiful ol world church in the heart of the city. The big wedding day arrived at 11:00 pm for the photographer, his assistant, and the wedding party. And what a wedding day it was. Beautiful blue skies and a drop dead gorgeous bride and groom; Lindsey Voitlander and Dr. Brian Stubitsch. Yep, she's a nurse and they met on the job. Brian's from Chicago, and Lindsey is a die hard Bears fan, so the Windy City was the had to be location for their wedding day.

After the ceremony we spent several hours driving around getting snaps in front of Soldiers Field, down by Lake Michigan, on a bridge, etc. Lot's of great cityscape backgrounds everywhere you turned.

Reception was at the Holiday Inn Marc Plaza, right down town, on the 15th floor with a terrific view of the city all around. The usual fun was had by all, but Lindsey threw in a special twist. Her garter bore the Chicago Bears logo. Touch down!

Madison WI photographer Terry Talbot

http://www.talbotphoto.com/

The CPAs and the time tunnel

The Wisconsin Institute of CPAs met last night at the Milwaukee Public Museum, one of the largest public museums in the country. The place is an incredible archeological time tunnel into

the past. The get together was on the first floor, with dinner in the Streets of Old Milwaukee and European Village area of the museum. The event was first class all the way, thanks to event planner Victoria's (WICPA) exquisite attention to detail. The tables were elegantly set and the food was superb. It was a fun shoot with a fun group of folks. Thanks to Maria for suggesting to the WICPA the museum as a location, and to Sherry Albrecht for her charming company at dinner.

I shot the event handheld using a Nikon D200 w/18-200 VR lens. Many of the shots were done by available light with the camera set to P (program - I use this setting most of the time) and auto white balanced. I also used a Nikon SB800 speedflash for fill on some of the coule and group shots. Post production was through Adobe Lightroom for color and exposure etc.

About the Milwaukee Public Museum:

"From its modest beginnings in 1882, the Milwaukee Public Museum currently houses over 6 million specimens. Permanent exhibits are contained in three and a half floors of exhibit area, with additional space for traveling and temporary exhibits. Tour the Museum's 150,000 square feet of exhibit space to visit Africa, Asia, Europe, the Arctic, South and Middle America, the Pacific Islands and a Costa Rican Rainforest.

Take a small step back in time to the turn-of-the-century Streets of Old Milwaukee and European Village and to ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Or, take a giant leap back more than 65 million years to The Third Planet, see the world's largest-known dinosaur skull and a life-sized replica of Tyrannosaurus rex. Stroll amid free-flying butterflies from around the world in The Puelicher Butterfly Wing."
Madison WI photographer Terry Talbot

http://www.talbotphoto.com/

Today is my grandson's 3rd birthday

My grandson Austyn turns 3 today. The day arrived on May 2nd, and the fruitcake came out of the freezer. I've seen a lot of interesting wedding cakes, but this was probably the most unsual. Christine and Jason said it tasted great, and I bet it did (grandma said she used a lot of rum and brandy in the fixings). It was a great wedding and a lot of fun to shoot. The weather on the wedding day was a little cool for an out of doors ceremony, but the locals referred to it as free air conditioning. We did the formals at the beach front Ritz Carlton before the ceremony, and then on to the very elegant Buenvenuto for the ceremony and reception. Great party. I stayed until 1:30 and followed the bride and groom to their home for an after the wedding party. Those Floridians sure have fun. And the bride sold me her 2003 Nissan 350Z sports car for a steal. Look at each other

Please remember you are marrying each other not the minister or the registrar. I took ten years out of professional photography to become a BAptists Minister and I want to assure you its okay to face one another. You have spent a small fortune on wedding photography, but at the crucial moment all that anyone sees in your backs - talk to whoever is doing the wedding and TELL them you want to look at each other.

2. Do, do crazy things on the day

Please do act on the spur of the moment. Spontaneous things can work really great on wedding photographs and a good photographer will lap it up.

3. Colour or Black and White ?

Some will say what goes around comes around. But the reality is that black and white and colour photography are very different. Black and white is much more atmospheric and dramatic. Look at samples of photography because colour photographs should be either subtle or vibrant never wishy washy. Make sure you get both in your album. Ask what the mix will be, i usually do 70% black and white for intimate shots and 70% colour for group shots. Ask the photographer which they prefer and why.

4. Do it for real NOT mock

Beware the part-time wedding photographer who will want to do MOCK cake cutting and MOCK first dance so they can get away. Don't accept MOCK anything. If your photographer is not there when you actually cut the cake, then they've missed the speeches, and the meal and that special moment, and the... You want your photographer by your side all day.

5. Can you trust your photographer?

Trust is important. You have to feel you can trust your photographer, after all they will see you all made up and completely un-made. You have to feel you can trust your photographer so when they ask you to do something or pose in a particular way, its going to make a great photograph.

6. Style and approach

A photographer can't be all things to all people. Ask what their photographic philosophy is - reportage, traditional, journalism. Does their approach agree with yours?

7. Listening

The first time you meet your photographer, check whether you feel they listened to you. At the end of the day you want to open your album and get the wow factor, that happens when the photographer gives you something of what you are expecting, with things your were never expecting.

8. Flexibility

"Customer is King" is a true saying, or in this case " Queen" and being flexible is essential. I guess all wedding photographers go through the "Packages" stage in their career, I know I did. Here my package, take it or leave it. One thing to know about your wedding is that its UNIQUE. Therefore, you need a photographer who appreciates your uniqueness. If a photographer is not flexible to your desires before your wedding day, they will be even less flexible on your day.

9. To be seen or not to be seen

There's a big difference between being seen and being noticed. Its your day so do you really want a photographer taking over? - And it happens in so many ways - from telling the couple what to do - to making everyone wait for their meal. I've even known a photographer stop the ceremony because he missed a shot. Remember its your day and your photographer is there to guide you NOT dictate to you. However the thing that annoys me most is the photographer with the big flashgun. With the right investment in high speed lenses and a proper understanding of exposure 95% of photography can and should be taken with available light. In the last 12 months i've only used flash once.

10. Know what's going to happen in case of bad weather

You can never guarantee the weather. When the sun is out photography is easier because there are usually lots of places to go with the bridal party to get great photographs. But when its raining its a different story. Space is usually limited and locations likewise. Without exception I always checkout the wedding and reception venues if i've never photographed there before. Because I try to use only available light I need to see where the light is good - but I also check out where we can photograph on a rainy day.

Madison WI photographer Terry Talbot

http://www.talbotphoto.com/

Film vs Digital Wedding Photography

One of the most hotly debated topics among professional wedding photographers is whether digital wedding photography is as good as or better than traditional film. This is a natural debate as our world becomes more digitized. The majority of the population owns or has access to a digital camera and we enjoy the extra features and enhanced functionality that our personal digital cameras provide. When the time comes to decide on our wedding photography, it is only natural that we would consider digital wedding photography.
Only recently has digital photography begun to gain some recognition. Early digital cameras had many limitations that left the photos looking mechanical and cold. Today’s cameras have come a long way to correct these flaws and offer professional wedding photographers yet another tool to work with. Digital wedding photography is well on its way to coming into its own.
For many situations, digital cameras offer a number of significant advantages. A digital camera provides immediate feedback to the photographer. This enables him or her to risk tricky or difficult shots, knowing that if anything needs to be corrected it can be. This is especially important for photojournalistic wedding photography, in which many of the shots will be taken in ambient light conditions. A related benefit is the ability to take a greater number of shots. The photographer can shoot as many pictures as time and memory card will allow, without worrying about the cost of film.
Another major advantage of digital wedding photography is that all of the settings are internal. Rather than having to interrupt the proceedings to change film speeds or simply change out a film roll, the photographer can make changes quickly and easily.
Most couples today want their photos in a digital format as well as an album. While film photos can be scanned, moving digital photos around electronically is less labor intensive and therefore less expensive. In addition, digital photos can be easily manipulated if the couple wants copies of certain photos in black and white or sepia tones, for example.
The major drawback to digital wedding photography at this time is that many wedding photographers are not yet completely familiar with the new style. Digital photography is in many ways a completely different animal than film photography, and some very talented professional wedding photographers are simply not at their best with digital photography. When interviewing possible digital wedding photographers, be sure that you ask how long the photographer has been using this style. Also ask to see copies of both his film work and his digital work for comparison purposes.
Digital wedding photography is increasing in popularity. The medium has many distinct advantages over film photography. However, the medium that you choose will be determined by many factors, including your personal comfort, the comfort of your photographer, and the style of your wedding. Look at examples of both digital wedding photography and film photography and decide which is right for you.
Planning a wedding can be a very daunting task. What with time constraints as well as budget concerns, there are some couples choose to give a few of the of the more key aspects completely out of their wedding completely. One of those aspects should not be Photography. In this article, we will handle some basic issues on wedding photography that all couples ought to know when planning their grand day.
How far in advance should I book a photographer for my wedding?
Numerous photographers urge reserving a photographer as soon as you get engaged, or at least until you recognize when the wedding date is. It is advised that the engaged couple book 8-12 months in advance since numerous studios book wedding dates quickly. Weddings are more numerous from May to October while the weather is most favorable. If you choose to have your wedding within this period, the photographer you pick will probably ask for a non-refundable deposit or retainer fee to book your wedding date. This ensures that you will have this studio or photographer on your desired date, and ensuring a job for your photographer. The sooner you book your photographer, then it is more likely you are able to have a solid working relationship with your first choice.
What are some of the benefits of hiring a professional?
The primary benefit to employing a professional wedding photographer is the experience that they have. The vast majority wedding photographers have extensive experience working with numerous different people and awkward personalities. They have faced atrocious weather conditions, and encountered numerous technical problems. Because they are specialized in photography, they are well equipped to deal with numerous wedding sizes or photo demands. Unlike a friend or relative of the couple, a professional photographer’s all-important goal is catching candid moments on film. Knowing they are depended on delivering superior photos that will be loved for years to come, they are less apt to be carried away by aspects of the ceremony. With an event that allows no second chances, hiring a professional is a good investment that will help keep your memories of your special day around for years.
How do I choose a photographer for my wedding?
First, get several testimonials from people you know about different photographers they have used. relatives as well as friends who have had positive experiences with the photographers or studios they have used usually should be more than enthusiastic to share this information with you. After going over web sites as well as portfolios on the internet, get in touch with each individual studio or particular photographer that you are interested. Schedule a meeting at their individual studio and look at different samples of their work in person, preferably with each party of the engaged couple. Ask the photographer to see pictures from assorted weddings, and if at all possible a total wedding. Doing so provides for complete evaluation of the various styles as well as the formats of photography, or even artistic effects that each photographer can provide for you. Ask yourself if they share your artistic vision while looking through their portfolio. Are you in agreement with the various styles that they use? Is the quality to your liking? Also, observe how well you interact as well as communicate with each photographer. Besides family and friends, your photographer is the one individual that you will be contacting with the most. Being comfortable enough to talk with them while your wedding will diminish the tension of an a day which is already hectic. Once you have selected a photographer whose work you are happy with, and whose personality is harmonious with your own, you can then talk about price ranges.
When hiring a professional photographer how much should I expect to spend?
Expect photography alone to be around 5% to 10% of your total budget. That might be anywhere from $900 to $2,000, and possibly up to $10,000. This is all dependent on various elements for instance advertising, transportation, education, and insurance. Quotes on price include the cost of equipment for instance cameras and film. Top-notch professional cameras can cost in the thousands. While developing black and white film is a lot more pricey than producing color prints due to a long handcrafted process. Other things that couples have to take account into their budget for photography involve the number of hours that photographers spend at your wedding, additional photographers, extra prints, and custom albums. In addition, expect to pay more for a professional who is in high demand.
What about black and white photos as opposed to color?
There are a some advantages and disadvantages in terms of shooting in both black and white, as well as color film. Color is the more proficient of the two formats. It furnishes you an precise delineation of the events that just took place, and can easily be changed into black and white prints. Nonetheless, they do not last as long as prints that stem from black and white film. Yet numerous couples opt for color because it is not as high-priced as black and white film. Black and white film is the alternative for numerous wedding photographers who view themselves photojournalists. Additionally, many couples believe that black and white photos have a sense of timelessness as well as elegance to them. The primary reason why it costs more to shoot with black and white film rather than with color is because it is developed by hand. In this case, each exposure is an original piece of artwork that is untouched by technology. Selecting either black and white film, or color prints will all depend on what the photographer favors to use, and what styles you are akin to, and the amount you are willing to spend.

Madison WI photographer Terry Talbot

http://www.talbotphoto.com/

Wedding Photography - Why It Is One Of The More Critical Choices For Your Wedding

Wedding photography is one of the most important decisions that an engaged couple must make. While the dress, cake, flowers and other details are of course important, the wedding photography will capture the event for all time. When deciding on wedding photography, you need to make not only the all-important decision on which photographer to use, but will also need to decide what style of wedding photography you would like.
Engaged couples have more options now than ever before regarding styles of wedding photography. Photojournalistic wedding photography is a highly popular choice for today’s weddings, offering a much less stilted wedding album than the old formally posed shots. Black and white wedding photography is also very popular, adding an old-time romance to your wedding photos.
Contemporary wedding photography allows couples to customize their wedding photographs freely to match the feel of the wedding ceremony. The traditional posed wedding portrait is quite appropriate to the old-fashioned formal wedding. However, this is only one of a myriad of wedding styles from which couples now may choose. From jumping out of an airplane or exchanging vows on a roller coaster to highly themed custom ceremonies, weddings in general are much less standardized. It is only fitting that wedding photography should also change with the times.
Many who are on a budget worry that affordable wedding photography will not allow them to choose the style of photography that they most desire. In reality, photographers in all price ranges are starting to offer alternative styles of wedding photography in an effort to stay competitive in the rapidly changing market.
One of the first decisions that couples must make regarding wedding photography is whether to go with traditional film photography or the newer and increasingly popular digital wedding photography. Both styles have distinct pros and cons. If your wedding will be of a more traditional style, you may wish to follow tradition and select film photography. Film also provides a softer feel for certain styles of photography. The major disadvantage to film is the inability to preview the photographs immediately. While any professional photographer will be able to take excellent photos without the immediate feedback, couples whose wedding photography includes difficult action shots may feel more secure knowing that the photographer is able to preview and re-shoot photos as necessary.
Digital photography is the wave of the future. More and more photographers are starting to turn to digital photography as their preferred medium. Digital photography allows the photographer the freedom to experiment with tricky shots, as he or she will know immediately whether the shot was a success. It also allows the photographer to snap virtually limitless numbers of photos rather than being tied to a certain number of rolls for budgetary purposes.
Choosing the type of wedding photography and a photographer that fits your style is more involved than it was several years ago. The couple plays an active part in the planning of photography, as opposed to handing all the choices over to the photographer and hoping for the best. Affordable wedding photography is available if you take the time to look for it and ask the right questions. Talk to as many photographers as you can until you find one that fits your personal style.
Planning a wedding can be a very daunting task. What with time restraints as well as budget concerns, some couples choose to give a few of the of the more critical aspects out of their wedding totally. Photography should not be one of them. In this article, we will handle several fundamental topics on wedding photography that every couple should acknowledge while preparing for their grand day.
When I book a photographer how soon in advance should I do this?
Many photographers recommend booking a photographer as soon as you become engaged, or at least until you recognize when the wedding date is. It is suggested that the engaged couple book at least 8-12 months in up front because some studios book wedding dates quickly. Weddings are more prominent from May to October while the weather is most favorable. If you choose to hold your wedding within this period, the photographer you select will likely need a non-refundable deposit or retainer fee to book the date of your wedding. This makes certain that you will have this studio or photographer on your desired date, as well as guaranteeing a contracted job for your photographer. The sooner you book your photographer, then it is more likely you are able to work with your first choice.
When contracting a professional what are some of the advantages?
The main advantage to hiring a professional wedding photographer is experience. Most wedding photographers have experience dealing with numerous various individuals and problematic personalities. They have confronted unfavorable weather conditions, and faced various technical problems. Since they specialize in photography, they are well prepared to manage assorted wedding sizes or photo demands. Unlike a friend or relative of the couple, a professional photographer’s chief goal is capturing candid moments on film. Acknowledging they are counted on on delivering high quality photos that will be cherished for numerous years to come, they are less likely to be carried away by facets of the ceremony. With an event that allows no second chances, hiring a professional is a good investment that will help keep your memories of your special day around for years.
What is the best way to pick a good photographer for my wedding needs?
First, get a few testimonials from individuals you are friends with about various photographers they have used. Friends and relatives who have had beneficial experiences with the photographers or studios they have used usually should be more than eager to share this information with you. After reviewing websites and portfolios on the internet, get a hold of each studio or photographer that you are interested in. Set up a meeting at their individual studio and examine various samples of their work personally, preferably with each party of the engaged couple. Ask the photographer to view pictures from various weddings, and if possible a entire wedding. Doing it this way allows for complete evaluation of photography styles and formats, or even artistic impressions that each individual photographer can offer you. Ask yourself if they share your artistic vision while looking through their portfolio. Do you agree with the styles they use? Is the quality to your liking? Also, observe how well you communicate and interact with each photographer. As Well as friends and family, your photographer is the one person you will be contacting with the most. Being comfortable enough to interact with them while your wedding will lessen the tension of an a day which is already hectic. Once you have selected a photographer whose work you are happy with, and whose demeanor is compatible with your own, you can then talk about various costs.
When employing a professional photographer for my wedding is there any possible way to spend less money?
There are a couple of things you can do to pull down the cost of photography without sacrificing quality. Numerous photographers decide what they charge based on how many hours they spend at a wedding. Signifying, holding a short wedding can significantly bring down how much you that you spend. Cut the cost of extras by either purchasing a basic photo package, or acquiring a photographer who is prepared to permit you to keep the proofs. This way you have the option to print extra copies while not getting charged an excess fee. In addition, selecting to shoot with digital cameras is not just budget conscious, but time saving as well.
After I have selected a photographer, what other questions should I ask him or her?
Once you have made a committal to a photographer of your preference, there are nonetheless more questions you need to ask. With larger studios especially, you ought to ask whether you will be working directly with the photographer you first talked to. Ask to have a meeting with the person who will actually be shooting photos of your wedding. You might also want to ask the length of time your photographer has been in business, or the amount of weddings of your size that they have worked with in the past, and if they have liability insurance. You may like to ask him or how long it will take to get the proofs back to you or their rate for printing extra photos and albums. You ought to unquestionably inquire about their back up plan and arrangements for any unexpected changes. As well as any refund or cancellation policies they may have.

Madison WI photographer Terry Talbot

http://www.talbotphoto.com/

Latest Trends in Wedding Photography

Wedding photography in the modern world is constantly changing. Every day, new technology and new styles in fashion are changing the way many professionals deal with photojournalistic wedding photography. Professional photographers have to keep up with the latest trends in order to increase their client base and keep their customers happy. Not only do the photographers have to keep up with trends locally, but regionally and nationally as well. The California wedding photography studio has to keep up with what trends are happening in Florida wedding photography and vice versa.
The main trend in California wedding photography is photojournalism. Photojournalistic wedding photography allows the wedding day to unfold naturally. Rather than playing an active role in posing shots, the wedding photographer captures events as they happen. This style of photography results in more candid and natural looking wedding photographs. The major drawback to this style is that an inexperienced photojournalist may miss certain shots or fail to capture the shots well in the ambient light. If you choose to go with photojournalistic wedding photography, be certain that your photographer is experienced in this style.
The typical Seattle wedding photographer will blend the new trend of wedding photojournalism with a more timeless traditional style. The Seattle trend seems to be creating a wedding album that highlights the best of all worlds, thus offering the most complete account of your wedding day.
Florida wedding photography has begun to move in the direction of candid photography, which is very similar to photojournalistic wedding photography. The main difference between the candid and photojournalistic styles is that in wedding photojournalism, the shots combine to create a dramatic storyline. Candid photography is more laid back in style, reflecting the general feel of a Florida wedding.
The trend in Toronto wedding photography appears to be “creative candid” photography. This style is a sort of offshoot of both the laid back candid photography popular in Florida and the dramatic photojournalism of the California market. Rather than simply sitting passively and letting the events unfold, the creative candid photographer works to set up good candid shots, but without the posing required by the timeless style.
Gone are the days of wedding photography in the style where everyone in the bridal party stood stiffly in front of the lens. Couples today want their photos to look natural, not forced. This natural and candid style of wedding photography has given wedding albums warmth and beauty previous wedding albums have never seen before.
The main thing to keep in mind is that your wedding album is a reflection of you, the couple. If the style of your wedding is traditional, then the wedding photography in your album should reflect that. Candid shots might not work well for a formal wedding, but might be better for a wedding on a beach or any other outdoor setting. If you like the look and feel of Florida wedding photography (and your budget can afford it), find a photographer from that area to do your pictures. There is no reason why you have to limit yourself to a local photographer, if none of them fit your needs.
Planning a wedding can be a very daunting task. What with time restraints and budget concerns, there are some couples prefer to give a few of the of the more larger aspects completely out of their wedding altogether. One of those aspects should not be Photography. In this article, we will handle several rudimentary matters on wedding photography that all couples should recognize while planning their extraordinary day.
How far in advance should I book a photographer for my wedding?
Numerous photographers advocate booking a photographer as soon as you become engaged, or at least until you recognize when the wedding date is. It is advised that the couple who is engaged book 8-12 months in advance since some studios book wedding dates promptly. Weddings are more numerous from months of May all the way to October when the weather is most favorable. If you choose to have your wedding during this period of time, the photographer you select will in all likelihood expect a non-returnable deposit or retainer fee to book your wedding date. This makes certain when the your wedding arrives you will have this photographer or studio ready for you, and assuring a job for your photographer. The sooner you book your personal photographer, the more likely you are able to work with your first choice.
When contracting a professional what are some of the advantages?
The primary advantage to employing a professional wedding photographer is the experience that they have. The majority of wedding photographers have experience dealing with numerous different people and difficult personalities. They have confronted deplorable weather conditions, and have run across various technical problems. Because they are specialized in photography, they are well outfitted to handle various sizes of the weddings or for the different demands for photos. Unlike a friend or relative of the couple, a professional photographer’s main goal is catching candid moments on film. Recognising they are expected on delivering brilliant photos that will be loved for numerous years to come, they are less apt to be carried away by aspects of the ceremony. With an event that allows no second chances, hiring a professional is a good investment that will help keep your memories of your special day around for years.
What types of cameras are commonly used in wedding photography?
There are three main types of cameras that are used in wedding photography. They are digital cameras, 35mm cameras, as well as medium format types of cameras. In this new age of digital technology, 35mm is still a widely used camera when it comes to wedding photography. These are utilized primarily for fast action wedding shots. They are valued for their durability, small size, and their simplicity in terms of use. Nowadays, digital camera have become a lot more popular, even preferred in terms of wedding photography. The quality of photos is just good as film, also there is no time needed for processing, no risk of damaging negatives, as well as the fact that photos can easily be adjusted for a better outcome. Medium Format cameras produce a negative that is up to three times larger than one from a 35mm camera, without a loss of detail. Nevertheless, Medium Format cameras are much bigger than 35mm’s as well as digital cameras. A fourth kind of camera that may be utilized inside of a studio used primarily for a pre-wedding shot is a Large Format camera. These types of cameras are stationary in function due to their size and weight. They are mainly used for commercial studio photography. Although these cameras have an first-class lens, the costs for photos that are taken with this type of camera can be pretty high-priced.
What kind of photo styles do photographers usually use at weddings?
Photographers use two principal styles at weddings. The first kind is portrait style or commonly named traditional, the full-dress poses of the bridal party, family, and friends of the couple. There are little to no candid photographs with this style. The other method that is used is photojournalistic style. This is a more contemporary and modern. It is about shooting up photos of spontaneous moments, as well as genuine emotion. These types are taken with very little to no direction from the photographer. There are two additional types of styles that are not as commonly used as Traditional and photojournalistic, and they are normally cretuve as well as illustrative photography. Illustrative photography is commonly arranged like a commercial photo shoot. The types of photos captured in this style are analogous to those seen in magazines and even billboards. With creative photography, photographers have the freedom, employing various lighting as well as different angles, to produce their own artistic interpretation of your wedding day.
How about photos that are black and white as opposed to pictures that are color?
There are a some advantages and disadvantages in terms of shooting in both black and white, as well as color film. Color is the more proficient of the two formats. It provides you an accurate delineation of the events that took place, and can quickly be switched into black and white prints. Notwithstanding, they do not last as long as prints that stem from black and white film. Even So many couples pick out color since it is not as pricey as black and white film. Black and white film is the choice for many wedding photographers who view themselves photojournalists. Additionally, numerous couples believe that black and white photos have a feel of classic elegance and timelessness to them. The all-important reason why the costs is more to shoot with film that is black and white instead of with color is because it is built by hand. In this sense, each exposure is an original piece of artwork that is untouched by technology. Choosing either black and white film, or color prints will all depend on what the photographer chooses to use, and what styles you are akin to, and how much you are willing and able to spend.

Madison WI photographer Terry Talbot

http://www.talbotphoto.com/

When to splurge, when to save on wedding costs

By LISA TOLIN
The Associated Press

Khris Cochran splurged for her wedding seven years ago. The ceremony was in a rose garden overlooking San Francisco Bay. The cake was made by a star baker featured on the Food Network. The honeymoon was in French Polynesia.

Then came the debt. She was $5,000 in the hole before she lost her Silicon Valley job in the dot-com bust."It took years to get out of that debt," she says. "By being so tied to the wedding dream, I ended up in a financial nightmare."

Weddings are said to be recession-proof, but the same can't be said for couples' budgets. As the economy takes a hit, many nearly-weds are looking for ways to scale back on a lavish wedding without sacrificing a special day. What's worth the splurge, and what's a smart save? Here are some ideas for richer and for poorer:

Save: Guest list

You can always elope. Barring that, if you want to save money, trim the guest list. "You really don't need to invite everyone you know or have a party of 20 bridesmaids," says Maria McBride, an editor at Brides magazine and author of "Party Basics for New Nesters."

If you really want a big crowd, consider a smaller wedding with a separate cocktail reception. It beats a 300-person sit-down dinner in both cost and atmosphere, says wedding planner Marcy Blum. "There's no way to go about making it affordable andreally fabulous, unless you're a rock star or someone you know is Kuwaiti." If your parents really want all their friends to attend, or your colleagues at work expect invitations, remember it's your day. A good rule of thumb: Have you had dinner with this person in the last year? If not, and you live in the same city, consider
a cut.

Looking back, Cochran wishes she and her husband had invited only the people
closest to them. "It's not only an instant budget saver but a way to make the whole
event more intimate," she says.

Splurge: Setting

David Tutera, who planned Star Jones' wedding, advises couples to focus their spending on the venue and decor, including flowers. "People walk away remembering the unique experience you create and not the food that you served," he says.

For Eda Kalkay, design and location were the most important decisions for her October 2007 wedding. The 150 guests to her city-meets-country wedding at an estate in New Hope, Pa., were treated to a white fantasy in the woods, with globes of white hydrangea, white candelabra and a surprise performance by a gospel choir. "It was so beautiful it felt surreal," says Kalkay.

If you want a deluxe setting at a discount, ask for a deal on a Friday or Sunday wedding, or cut costs with a daytime affair. And consider alternatives to expensive floral displays, like smaller "tablescapes" of candles and fruit, or centerpieces using a single type of flower, bought wholesale.

Save: Invitations

Cochran, who now runs the Web site DIYBride.com, says invitations are an easy way to cut costs. "Paper is cheap, and most people have a computer, word processing software and a decent printer already at home, which makes invitations an easy way to save some cash and be creative," she says.

Invitations set the tone for an event, but Tutera, author of "The Party Planner," thinks
guests are more likely to remember the last moments of a wedding. Etiquette experts still frown on electronic invitations, so prepare for raised eyebrows if you cut that corner. Instead, Blum suggests cutting down on invitation inserts and heavy stock that waste paper and increase postage.

Splurge: Photos

A wedding is only one day, but the photos last forever. Even on a budget, brides
rarely lament the amount spent on a quality photographer. "We really love our wedding photos and still get compliments on them to this day. She was worth the extra cash we spent," Cochran says. If you're cutting corners, however, you may be able to find a skilled student
photographer who's eager to earn extra cash and build a portfolio. And you can forgo
a videographer. "It's very passé compared to photography," says Tutera.

Save: Favors

"Nobody needs another place card frame, or a bottle of crummy wine with your name on it," Blum says. It may seem like a small expense, but even cheap trinkets add up when you have a lot of guests. Odds are, there will be no complaints if you skip the favor entirely. (Cochran also points to money-wasting extras like toasting flutes as a bad idea.) If you really want to give your guests favors, Blum suggests something edible. "You'd be much better off to have all your bridesmaids or ushers bake cookies and enclose a great recipe," she says. Another nice touch: offering a coffee cake or brioche on the way out for the next morning's breakfast.

Madison WI photographer Terry Talbot

http://www.talbotphoto.com/

Finding High Quality Wedding Photography

High quality wedding photography is an important ingredient in today’s wedding planning process. Indeed it is the one building block that provides the couple with a physical reminder of how wonderful their big day was. The difficulty, however, is what constitutes a high quality wedding photographer? If a couple does not know how to identify a high quality wedding photographer the chances are not good that they will happen upon one.
Indeed, the chances are good they will end up with average or even poor wedding pictures, giving them low value for their money. Even if a couple has the money to simply go out and hire the most expensive photographer around there is no guarantee that they will end up with the best possible wedding pictures, much less the best value for the money. Likewise, hiring the photographer that is booked many months in advance is no guarantee, though both price and popularity are indeed indicators that they might have the requisite skills to do the job that you want.
However, since most soon to be married couples cannot afford to simply go out and hire the most expensive and do not have or want to take the time to engage the wedding photographer that is booked two years in advance it is crucial to find a way to get the best value for your money. Put simply, what specifically are you paying the photographer at your wedding to do or possess?
First, a wedding photographer is compensated for their technical knowledge and to possess the right equipment. This is obvious. To find someone that is really skilled a couple needs to look at a portfolio of entire weddings taken by the specific photographer they are considering, not just a patchwork collection of the best pictures they or their company took from a variety of weddings. Anyone can put together an album of great photos if they take enough pictures. The problem is that an engaged couple are buying an entire wedding’s worth of pictures so compare on that level.
Second, a high quality wedding photography grows out of the photographer’s interpersonal ability. To many this seems absurd, but in truth this is probably the single most important factor in ending up with the best possible wedding pictures. A couple gets the best value from a photographer that sets them and their family at ease because the posed pictures will look most natural and the candid pictures will be more candid.
Third, take into consideration the photographer’s time and labor. If a pair needs to watch their budget this is the primary place to look. By carefully scheduling the wedding day so that the photographer can get in, get the pictures they need and get out, the price should be less than keeping them around all day. By scrutinizing and rearranging the schedule, a couple therefore will likely be able to meet the expense of a more skilled photographer and therefore have better quality pictures as a result.
Fourth, popularity is evidence the photographer might be suitably skilled. If a photographer is popular among brides there might be a reason - or it might simply indicate that they have the right friends. Regrettably, like anything else, the most popular wedding photographers command the highest fees. Still a photographer could be worth a look in the event they are popular. Ultimately, however, no bride should let the prestige of engaging the most popular photographer deter them from taking all factors into consideration when making their decision.
Finally, when a couple finds a photographer that meets their needs in order to make certain they get that high quality wedding photography they are paying for they need to get a written contract that guarantees that the specific photographer they are engaging will in fact be the one who shows up to shoot the wedding.
Of course, the big selling point of the wedding photography industry is that they are not just selling pictures, they are selling memories. It is a valid point. Ultimately when a couple buys wedding pictures they are buying a tangible record of their big day celebrating their union. That has value. Nevertheless, only the couple themselves can come to a decision regarding how much value it has. Still, by taking into account the above four elements of wedding photography and by taking the precaution to get the specific individual photographer named in the contract, a couple ought to be able to uncover a skilled individual to provide that high quality wedding photography that will reflect their big day for years to come.

Madison WI photographer Terry Talbot

http://www.talbotphoto.com/
